The booming pistachio kernel market in Iran

The Iranian Pistachio Association – Trade Committee reports that in Farvardin, Iran exported a total of 1,503 tons of pistachio kernel products. This includes the following:

  • 211 tons of  in-shell pistachios
  • 1,167 tons of kernels
  • 117 tons of green kernels
  • 8 tons of other varieties
  • 8 tons of other varieties

When the kernels and green kernels are converted to their in-shell equivalent, they account for about 93 percent of this month’s total exports – a record high in the history of Iranian pistachio exports.

At the beginning of the season, Iran had an initial inventory of 230,000 tons of dried pistachios in shell. From Mehr 1403 (September 2024) to Farvardin 1404 (April 2025):

  • About 169,000 tons have already been consumed.
  • Of this amount, 147,000 tons (shell equivalent) have been exported.
  • About 22,000 tons were sold in the domestic market.

This estimate indicates that by the end of Farvardin 1404 (Farvid 1404), about 61,000 tons will still remain in storage.

This consumption pattern reflects both strong international demand and stable domestic sales. In fact, during the first seven months of the 1403/04 season, approximately 45 percent of Iran’s pistachio exports were shipped in the form of kernels and green kernels. For comparison, this share has been around 40 percent in each of the past two years. This increase not only reflects the growing global appetite for ready-to-eat pistachio kernels, but also highlights Iran’s ability to adapt to changing consumption trends.

In total, by the end of Farvardin 1404, 73 percent of the initial inventory had been consumed, which is evidence of the strong and sustainable demand for Iranian pistachios.
