Iranian Pistachio Kernels: Reiging Supreme in the Global Trade Market

According to Hivanuts, as reported by the Trade Committee of the Iranian Pistachio Association, 8,000 tons of various pistachio and pistachio kernels had been shipped during Tir 1404 (June–July 2025), according to data published by the Iran Customs Administration. On adjusting the weight of kernels and green kernels for in-shell dry pistachio equivalent, nearly 60% of this month’s export contained the above two varieties.

During the time between the start of Mehr 1403 (September 2024) and the end of Tir 1404 (July 2025), an amount of some 210,000 tons of in-shell dry pistachios has been consumed. Whereas 183,000 tons of this amount have been shipped out, 27,000 tons of it were sold domestically inside Iran, according to estimates.

One of the main features of this year’s strong export performance is the 47% share of kernels and green kernels of all in-shell equivalent exports—a staggering rise compared with the five-year average of 36%. The upsurge reflects the explosive rise in global demand for Iranian pistachio kernels, especially from the international food processing sector.

The cumulative weight to date weighted consumption as of the end of Tir was 91% of the opening stock for the year, which indicates that Iranian pistachios were in great demand during the current year. However, signs are that the Association may be compelled to revise its initial crop estimate towards the close of the marketing year.
