Iranian pistachio kernels: Dominating the global market

Strong export performance in 2025

According to data from the Iranian Customs Administration reported by Hiwanotes and the Trade Committee of the Iranian Pistachio Association, Iran exported about 8,000 tons of pistachios and pistachio kernels in Tīr 1404 (June-July 2025). Considering the equivalents of dried pistachios with shells, approximately 60% of these exports consisted of pistachio kernels and green kernels.

Exports versus domestic consumption

Between Mehr 1403 (September 2024) and Tir 1404 (July 2025), approximately 210,000 tons of dried pistachios in shell were consumed in total. Of this amount, 183,000 tons were exported, while about 27,000 tons were sold domestically in Iran. This indicates the country’s continued dependence on international markets for pistachio sales.

Increasing the share of brains in global trade

One of the most notable features of this year’s exports is the 47 percent share of kernels and green kernels in total shell equivalent shipments. This represents a significant increase compared to the five-year average of 36 percent. This increase clearly reflects the growing global demand for Iranian pistachio kernels, especially in the international food processing industry.

By the end of Tihr 1404, 91 percent of the year’s initial inventory had been consumed. This indicates exceptionally strong demand for Iranian pistachios throughout the marketing year. However, given the pace of consumption, the Iranian Pistachio Association may be forced to revise its initial crop estimates before the end of the year.
